The Parsons Police Department is encouraging residents and visitors to celebrate Memorial Day weekend safely as the community gathers for the annual Katy Days festivities at Forest Park. With increased traffic, family activities, and large public gatherings expected throughout the weekend, officers will be focused on promoting roadway safety and community awareness.
Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. It is also one of the busiest weekends of the year with travel, bringing increased vehicle traffic to Parsons and surrounding areas. The Parsons Police Department reminds motorists to drive responsibly, remain alert, and help ensure everyone can enjoy the holiday weekend safely.
Officers will be conducting increased patrols throughout the city during the Katy Days events and holiday travel periods. Special attention will be directed toward impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt usage, and pedestrian safety around event areas.
Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks emphasized the importance of community cooperation during the holiday weekend, "Memorial Day is a time of remembrance, reflection, and community. As families and visitors gather for Katy Days activities, we ask everyone to make safety a priority. Simple decisions such as wearing a seatbelt, avoiding distractions, and never driving impaired can save lives. We want everyone to enjoy the weekend and return home safely."
Lieutenant Kyle Wiford, who oversees Patrol and the Traffic Safety Program also encouraged the public to remain mindful of increased pedestrian traffic in and around Forest Park and event locations, "Katy Days brings a tremendous amount of positive activity to our community, and we are proud to help support those events. Drivers should expect heavier traffic patterns, watch carefully for pedestrians and children, and allow extra travel time throughout the weekend. Patience and awareness go a long way toward keeping everyone safe."
The Parsons Police Department offers the following Memorial Day weekend safety reminders:
- Always wear your seatbelt.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Avoid distracted driving, including texting while driving.
- Watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, and children near event areas.
- Obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices.
- Plan ahead for increased traffic and parking congestion near Forest Park.
- If attending events, designate a sober driver or arrange alternate transportation.
The Parsons Police Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend while honoring the true meaning of the holiday and supporting the many community activities taking place throughout Katy Days.
