As the New Year holiday approaches in a few short days, the Parsons Police Department is reminding motorists of the dangers of impaired driving as part of the nationwide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. This reminder is following a serious DUI-related crash that occurred on December 24, 2025.
At approximately 2:03 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24, officers responded to a vehicle collision at Neighbors Wine and Spirits, located at 806 N. 16th Street. Officers arrived to find a Jeep Wrangler that had struck an electrical pole behind the business, leaving the front of the vehicle suspended and creating a hazardous scene involving electrical lines.
Witnesses reported the driver appeared impaired and was attempting to exit the vehicle despite the dangerous conditions. Officers made contact with the driver, later identified as Randy Yeoman, who displayed clear signs of impairment. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol and acknowledged that alcohol played a role in the crash.
A records check revealed the driver's Kansas driver's license was revoked as a habitual violator and carried a court-ordered ignition interlock requirement. Officers confirmed the vehicle was not equipped with the required device. The driver was arrested and booked into custody on charges including Driving Under the Influence (DUI) 4th Offense, Driving while a Habitual Violator 2nd Offense, No Ignition Interlock Device and several other traffic violations. No bystanders or officers were injured during the incident.
"This crash is exactly why we stress the importance of planning ahead during the holidays," said Patrol Lieutenant Kyle Wiford, who oversee the traffic programs. "New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are among the most dangerous times of the year for impaired driving, but not the only holiday threat as we seen on Christmas Eve. If you're drinking, don't drive. Call a ride, use a rideshare service, or have a sober driver. One bad decision can change lives forever."
The Parsons Police Department recently announced that they are joining law enforcement agencies across Kansas in increased enforcement and education efforts during the statewide Taking Down DUI campaign, which runs through January 2nd, 2026. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 34 people die each day in the United States in drunk-driving crashes, deaths that are entirely preventable.
"Impaired driving is not a victimless crime," said Chief Robert Spinks. "This incident could have easily resulted in serious injury or death, not just to the driver, but to innocent people nearby. Our officers will be out in force during the New Year holiday, and we will hold impaired drivers accountable. Our message is simple: drive sober or get pulled over."
The Parsons Police Department urges everyone celebrating the New Year to make responsible choices:
· Plan a safe ride home before you start drinking
· Take the keys from someone who should not be driving
· Report suspected impaired drivers to local law enforcement
Travelers should take as many precautions as they can during the holiday. This means avoiding distracted driving and paying close attention to all drivers and pedestrians. You may not be impaired but should still be looking out for others who may be.
The Parsons Police Department wants to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year.
This continues to be an on-going investigation, and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It." All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. If anyone has any further information on this incident or any other criminal activity, please contact the Parsons Police Department at 421-7060 or call the Tip Line at 421-7057 or email at tips@parsonspdks.gov.
