The Parsons Police Department wants residents to stay informed and prepared as severe weather moves through our region this weekend. Understanding the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning can help you make the right decisions quickly.
🌪️ Tornado Watch
A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop in the area.
This is the time to prepare and stay alert.
During a watch you should:
• Monitor local weather reports and alerts
• Make sure your phone is charged and emergency alerts are enabled
• Identify your safe shelter location in advance
• Review your emergency plan with family members
• Be ready to move quickly if conditions worsen
🚨 Tornado Warning
A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.
This means take shelter immediately.
🏠 Where to Shelter
The safest places during a tornado are:
• A basement or storm shelter
• A small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building
• A bathroom, closet, or hallway away from windows
Protect yourself by:
• Covering your head and neck
• Using a mattress, blankets, or helmets if available
• Staying away from windows and exterior walls
⚠️ What to Avoid
• Do NOT try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle
• Avoid large open buildings such as gyms or warehouses
• Do not shelter under overpasses or bridges
• Avoid mobile homes if possible-move to a sturdier structure
📋 Plan Ahead
Prepare a small emergency kit that includes:
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Weather radio or phone alerts
• Water and basic supplies
• Important medications
• Sturdy shoes in case of debris
